cheap & works:
I have a cheap Chinese copy and it works. but it only allows me to use an early version of the Durametric software which is why it comes with the software on CD Rom. i cannot for example download version 6 from the Durametric website and use it with the copy cable.

You can update some of the Durametric clone cables, but most of them are bricked if you go beyond around version 5.0.6 of the Durametric software. Others are bricked way before that. So as Clint would say “Do you feel lucky?” They usually come with V3.1 software, which is hopelessly out of date, and very limited on what you can do on a 9×7 onwards. OK-ish for 9x6s though.
If you want something that will read and reset fault codes, and read live data, from all the control modules of everything from a 9×6 up to a 9×1, including Panameras and Cayennes, take a look at the iCarsoft i960 hand held scanner. About £100. It won’t reset service indicators, but is a useful tool for diagnostics, and resetting things like airbag lights. (No affiliation, by the way).

Yes if your car is listed it will generally work, but you need Win XP ideally though bodging some drivers for a later version of Durametric gets it to work on Win 8. Looking into this for you, I downloaded Durametric 5 or 6 and used the drivers. Or just source a cheap Win XP laptop.
“YMMV” but if you just want to fool around no harm in trying. I got some interesting info off this, and also reset an airbag light (oddly, via 993 model selection despite being a 996).
My conclusion, if you are half hearted about this and don’t really see the need to splash out on a Durametric kit, then yes, this is worth having, and useful.

I wish they would have emulated the FULL PIWIS functions but this is just a small part of what the dealer can do.
read & clear fault codes:
With the software I could only read fault codes for each of these item and then clear them. I went through each of them to see what other contents were shown and they all save for the airbag 04 showed “no fault” and the Climate Control had a whole page of errors of something like “left flapper valve value implausible”. The air con works fine so I left this alone.
I only bought this Durametric cable for the air bag light and it served my purpose. I would not know what to do with other fault codes if I had them.

You can also delete error codes, read a lot of live and stored performance data off it, etc etc.

It works as long as you know the limitations, major one being XP only unless you install the Durametric V6 drivers then you can get it to work on Win8 and presumably previous versions of Windows too.
I’m not sure re using Durametric V6 in its entirety though, I thought you needed a specific proprietary cable for that which is why the clones are always supplied with an older version of Durametric.
Useful tool if you are not willing (or needing) to commit to anything special.
woth, able to reset the airbag light:
For what it’s worth, this knock-off was able to reset my airbag light for a total outlay of $43. My 993 came back from some simple repairs with the light illuminated. Of course the garage know nothing about it and when asked said “common to the 993, we didn’t do it”.
The software installed says “durametric for porsche version” which was downloaded from their site. Sadly I did not take a screenshot or copy the fault codes which appeared for the air bag unit before I cleared them. I suspect that the functionality is limited due to the age of the software, when plugged in I only saw the following items to review / clear, and my exact recollection of the numbers following the modules is not clear:

yes i can confirm it works fine. Ordered from them last week. Ive been able to reset my airbag, sort service light etc and saved me an expensive trip to my local Porsche dealer.
The Durametric clone cable (also called Porsche PIWIS cable) is verified to works perfectly for fault codes read & clear and airbag light reset. But the cable cannot works for new software; you have to install Durametric on Windows XP only! That is, you cannot update Durametric sw to version 5 or version 6 for new vehicles. Durametric version 3 works with most Porsche in the year 1990 – 2007:

Porsche Durametric Enthusiast vs Professional Kit

This is for those who’re looking for a Durametric cable but don’t know which one to choose, the Enthusiast kit or the Pro kit.
Part 1: Which Durametric do pp use? Enthusiast or Professional
I have the Durametric Enthusiast and wish I had bought the pro. The Enthusiast lets you run all of the diagnostics but lacks most of the coding which would be beneficial.
My impression is that the other port tools are limited and not as developed.
I have Durametric Pro and it’s good, but seems like there are some things on my 09 Cayenne Turbo S that it won’t do, like bleed the PDCC hydraulics. It works great on my two 05 997s though. The other option some of the Cayenne guys like is the one from icarsoft, so maybe compare those 2 and then make your decision.
I have the Durametric pro… Durametric allows you to grab and record live values…. so you can track all kinds of information that is way beyond me…. so you can see what is going on inside the ignition/timing system, sensor values, etc. as you drive. I am a novice so I don’t understand this stuff but I gotta believe it is important if you are going to diagnose engine problems.
I have the Durametric pro. It seems the older the car, the better it works. On my 997, it’s great. On my 981, it’s ok but is prone to freezing. On the 2017 Cayenne, it crashes regularly and can’t do everything it can on other models.

I heard I can download a MUT III online. Is that true? Where?
There are various sources to obtain the MUT-III SOFTWARE online. However doing so through a torrent or FTP site is software considered piracy and illegal.

Do I need to install the file somewhere in my hard drive?
Yes, you will need to manually copy the FILE. it does not appear in the DB anywhere.
You select the TCU portion, then Options, then program TCU and manually search for the file. Then tell it Yes to continue with the programming.

My vin’s not recognized either! Where do you find the b001?
The DB in your installation is not for the proper region. Not to worry. It should show the current VIN and you can use that same one when doing VIN programming.

Note the “CFF_SST” subdirectory in the CDE12031 subdir (or off the root of the new CD you burned). All the different SST TCU ROM files are in there. Three for EVO (A749, B001, B151), some for Ralliart, some for other models with an SST.

You will need to manually copy those files to the computer then specifically tell the MUT3 program where to locate them. It’s not intuitive on how to do this, but it’s not particularly difficult either.

It’s just like falling off a bicycle – Learn it once and know it for life.

Is the VCI (large black box with both cables connected to it) powered on (there’s a small rocker switch on the side). A green light will come on.

Do you using the blue db25-OBD2 cable?
Was the VCI recognized by the OS when the USb cable was connected to the computer? It should install a driver for it. Look in Computer Management. Devices to see if it’s seen by the OS (with it connected, powered on). Try different USB cable.
Lastly the ignition switch must be in Run position, engine does not need to be running.
It’s always a good idea to have a battery charger connected when doing programming. Just in case the battery isn’t strong enough.

Outside of a defective unit or cable, that’s about it. The CF card plays no part as far as connecting to the car.

Is it true I can unlock Super Sport Mode and Launch Control with a MUT-III?

I don’t know of anyone who got the ecu update thing to work
but you don’t need it , it all works fine without it

I have been successful in getting EVERY update to install. But I agree there’s not much useful in there for me so far.

Then run the ECUUpdateJudg.exe program. All this does is populate the database with stuff that you probably won’t need. There can be useful ETACS/ABS/AYC/etc. updates but we have no way – just now – of knowing which ones we may want or what they do, or how to get back to what we just over-flashed.

Configure the Wireless Interface for GM MDI

GM MDI is a multiple wireless diagnostic interface with WIFI, which can be used to perform Pass-Thru programming on almost all vehicles (1996-now). It is one of reputable diagnosis in the markets; meanwhile, users encounter all kinds of problem, like configuring the wireless interface (one of typical problems). And here technicians offer some possible solutions.
–How to configure the Wireless interface?
· Connect to MDI with USB connection.
· Update the MDI firmware if required
· From the MDI explorer TAB, select the MDI and press the connect button.
· Select the Network Setup TAB.
· Select the ‘Enable Wireless Interface’ box in the Network Setup TAB.
· If using Dynamic IP addresses (DHCP) select the ‘Obtain an IP address automatically’ box.
· If using Static IP address:
o If connecting to the dealer network contact your IT/Network Administrator for IP
o Select the ‘Use the following IP address’ box.
o Enter the IP address to be used.
o Enter the appropriate Subnet mask.
· Select ‘Access Point’.
· Select ‘Refresh’ to list the SSID’s of the ‘in range’ Access Points available.


· If the SSID of the Access Point is not broadcast or is not in range may be entered manually
by selecting ‘Enter Network Name’ and entering the SSID.
· Select ‘Configure’ and enter the Access Point security information. Select ‘Next’.


· Select ‘Apply’.
· Verify settings in Properties tab.
· Signal Quality (fair, good, excellent) indicates the MDI has connected to AP.
· From MDI explorer TAB, select disconnect.
· Unplug the USB connector from the MDI.
· Unplug the wired Ethernet connector from the MDI if present.
· If the Car Diagnostic Tool MDI, PC and AP are configured properly, the MDI should still appear in the MDI
· Select Connect
–When configuring a Wireless interface for the MDI, which authentication and encryption level should be used?
It is necessary to access the AP/Router in order to determine these settings. It some cases you
are required to contact your IT/Network Administrator for this information. Authentication and
encryption level settings are dependent on the Access Point/Router security settings.

General questions about OBD2 interfaces:

Are these more or less recent USB to OBD2 devices pretty much the same? There are many out there, but is it correct that if the device connects to the port and can read and write, then it is all a matter of software after that point? Are the devices tied to proprietary software, or is the OBD2 port generic enough that any software will work with any (recent) interface?


If OBD was really a standard, there would be 4 pins on the connector. Instead there are 16 pins. There’s the old GM standard pins, the Ford pins, the European pins, the current Toyota pins, the Leaf pins…..

The connector that plugs into the OBD port has a microcomputer in it that translates some subset of the OBD possibilities into a serial protocol. That serial protocol can be delivered to a PC via USB or Bluetooth.

There are currently two major device standards in use, ELM and J2534. The cheap devices all use ELM, and most are imitations of the devices made by ELM Electronics.

ELM is ok for slow speed queries of the CAN bus on current Toyotas. There are a few premium ELM protocol devices that are fast enough to handle the full data rate on a Prius. The ELM protocol does not support the K-Line interface on the Prius, which means that TPMS, Gen2 keyfob, and Gen2 option setup cannot be supported by any software on the PC.

J2534 is required for use with Techstream. Which means the Denso interface that dealers use, the Mongoose, the Tactrix, or one of the Mongoose imitations like the Mangoose (I kid you not…). The Tactrix has really only been debugged with Subaru/Mitsubishi vehicles. I don’t have any experience with the Mongoose clones.

Note: the MVCI only are compatible with Windows XP, so you’ll want to confirm first. I purchased a Netbook to use with them, as it is smaller than my laptop and easier to maneuver in a car.

The new SD connect C4 (1:1 clone of the original) is able to work for DoIP. It’s the only C4 that supports ethernet communication (DoIP). Tested no issues on new mercedes with doip.

To use new MB Star SD Connect C4 DoIP diagnostic scanner, you need to configure it first. Follow steps below to configure SD Connect C4 DoIP multiplexer:

1. Go to local network connection

2. Press Properties


3. Choose Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), press OK to continue


4. Enter IP address

IP address:

Subnet mask:


5. Click on Advanced

6. Click on Add to configure DoIP IP address


7. Set DoIP IP address to 169.254.0.** (i.e

8. Click on OK to finish configuration.
