Tool Review: AE Tools MicroPod II with WiTech software

The reviewer finds this scan tool and software are among his favorite factory tools due to the ease of use and the depth of coverage provided.

The Chrysler Micropod II diagnostic tool from AE Tools is small enough to fit in a shirt pocket and offers 100-percent CAN coverage for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Fiat vehicle platforms, according to the manufacturer. This dongle-style, PC-based device can be used in place of the StarMobile, StarScan and WiTech Pod scan tools.
The Review

Martin Fay, president of The Motor Works of DeKalb in DeKalb, Ill., reviewed the AE Tools MicroPod II with WiTech software. Motor Works services and repairs domestic and imported vehicles, and Fay finds this scan tool and software are among his favorite factory tools due to the ease of use and the depth of coverage provided.

Fay says this tool offers him time savings when programming Chrysler vehicles. Before, when the shop needed to program Chrysler vehicle ECUs, they would make an appointment with a dealer a day or two ahead of time. Then, they would tow the vehicle to the dealership and wait at the dealership while the programming was performed. Now, they can perform the programming in-house, which can lead to days’ worth of time savings.

“The diagnostic time-savings is equally as large due to the superior organization and logical navigation of WiTech,” says Fay. In addition, the Chrysler MicroPOD II with WiTech software also supplies diagnostic repair information keyed to each trouble code.

He also likes the “ECU Not Built” function of WiTech software. “Knowing whether an ECU is communicating is critical to diagnosis.”

The most challenging job Fay used the MicroPod II with WiTech on was a 2007 Chrysler Pacifica. The vehicle, which was towed to the shop, had multiple dash warning lights on, the engine wasn’t cranking and the owner had previously replaced the powertrain control module (PCM). Fay says, “Using the MicroPod II and WiTech, we found several modules not communicating. The topology helped us determine which modules were talking on what buses. Having accurate code descriptions was also a great help.”

To diagnose this issue, Fay removed the non-functioning PCM, checked power and ground feeds to the unit and made corresponding repairs. “Repairs now allowed the Pacifica to crank and start, but immediately die. WiTech topology now showed a repaired PCM, but several other modules still failed to communicate, including the wireless control module,” says Fay.

“Removal of the wireless control module found a 12V feed wire missing. This had occurred when another party removed an aftermarket remote start. Wiring repairs now brought the remaining modules back online. The vehicle started and continued to run. The MicroPod II and WiTech software proved invaluable in this complicated diagnosis.”

Fay also uses this tool to program keys, wireless control and other modules, and to perform general diagnostics on many Chrysler vehicles.

Even though he had not used a previous version of this tool, Fay found the Chrysler wiTech MicroPod 2 and WiTech software easier to use than most factory scan tools currently on the market.

One of the tool’s greatest strengths, according to Fay, is the company’s support. “AE Tools will modem into your computer, install all the required files, perform the setup, ensure proper connection to the vehicle and then provide a mini lesson in the MicoPod II’s and WiTech’s use.

“Over time, Motor Works has experienced typical problems with scanner communication, programming, tool usage, etc.” He says, “All were solved with a call to AE Tools’ support line. We did not have to wait for a call back. Immediate help was obtained by staff who know their product inside-out. Compared to other support organizations, this is a dream.”

Even though the company offers support, Fay adds that it is up to the user to practice with the tool and maintain proficiency.

The MicroPod II from CnAutotool.com comes in a hard shell case with all required cabling, but Fay also suggests that the Flight Recorder button and cable would be good accessories to have on-hand. “They allow one to program the MicroPod II with a list of specific PIDs for recording during a road test. Once programmed, the laptop is disconnected from the MicroPod II and a push button is installed.

“When the technician or customer feels a problem occur, the button activates ‘recording’ mode. This data is then downloaded into the WiTech program for later viewing,” he adds. “This recording can help locate problems areas like a miss or shudder, that only occur when driving the vehicle.”

Although this tool ranks near the top of his personal list, Fay suggests the following adjustments could be made to improve the PID data graphing: “I would like to see cursors included for more accurate interpretation of data; the ability to move graph zero point (like Picoscope) would be a benefit; the ability to save graphs in video form and export them, without reliance on Flight Recorder would also be a great help,” he says.

Finally, he adds, “The inclusion of Guided Fault Finding like that of European scanners would make this tool near perfect.”

How to update from wiTECH Application Software

The article below explains different ways of updating Micropod 2 Software to the latest version if the PC/Laptop has been installed with 13.04.49 or later version.

Automatic update

Starting from version wiTECH 13.04.49, a new feature has been added to the wiTECH Diagnostic Application to notify the user when new wiTECH Software update is available for download and install. User will see the prompt as depicted below after the installation executable (.exe) file is completely downloaded to the PC:

User should click on “Update Now” button to complete the update process. Users can also select “Update Later” button to update the software at a later time. When the “Update Later” button is clicked, the “wiTECH Update Available” button will appear in the bottom of wiTECH screen as shown in the screenshot below:

User can click on the “wiTECH Update Available” button whenever it is convenient to start the update process.

Check for Updates

If update prompt does not appear in Auto Diagnostic tool wiTECH Diagnostic Application, user can check for updates by accessing “Check for Updates” option under “Help” menu of wiTECH Diagnostic Application as shown in the screenshot below:

If a vehicle is not available to connect, user can check for updates by launching wiTECH Application in “Standalone” mode and accessing “Check for Updates” option under “Help” menu as shown in the screenshot below:

Upon selecting the “Check for Updates” option, the Software Manager should launch and display the latest update. Please check the checkbox, click on “Install” button and follow the on-screen instructions.

When you select “Check for Updates” option, you may see “There are no application updates available at this time” in a message window as appear in the screenshot below despite there is an application update.

Upgrading wiTECH Application version manually

Please follow the steps listed below to update the wiTECH Application Software manually.

1.Start > All Programs >Software Updates

2.Software Manager will prompt if an update is available for the Chrysler wiTech MicroPod 2.
3.Follow the Install Shield Wizard prompts to complete the install.

How to Set up wiTech Micropod 2 with DRB III Emulation

Here’s the customer solution to make Clone wiTech Micropod 2 Chrysler diagnostic tool work with DRB Emulation.

Intention:

Trying to find one micropod II that would work properly with DRB Emulation. Especially with Chrysler Crossfire.

Credit to Radius from Mhhauto. You are at your risk.

Test procedure:

Test 3 different micropod interfaces. 2 devices did not work with DRB III emulation at all, no matter which vehicle. The 3rd device worked and it worked on Chrysler Crossfire – access to ALL modules.

I think the 2 devices which did not work are missing hardware for K-Line or some such.

The device verified working is an OFFLINE ONLY version of Car Diagnostic Tool witech micropod 2 , but I only use it for diagnostics, not for programming as I do not have a TechAuthority account. So if you need one for online use this is not the unit to buy.

How to get witech to work with Enhanced DRB III Emulator:

1: Make a backup copy of the partition from the hard drive included with the micropod!
2: Install HDD in laptop
3: Set date to 01/01/17 BEFORE booting from laptop
4: Boot to HDD
5: Allow windows to install drivers, etc, as needed for your laptop and reboot as needed.
6: Once all of that is done, do NOT run WiTech yet!
7: Turn OFF internet!
8: Navigate to C:\ProgramData\wiTECH\jserver\data\core\stubs
9: Install DRB Emulator stub
10: Install DRB Enhanced emulator stub
11: Install K-Line stub
12: Reboot computer
13: ALLOW internet access
14: Run Flexnet software updater. Do NOT update WiTech!!!
15: Flexnet will find updates for enhanced DRB and K-Line
16: Install K-Line update first
17: Install Enhanced update next.
18: Once updates and downloaded and installed, turn OFF internet and NEVER turn on again!
19: Reboot computer
20: Attach Micropod to car. When green LED turns on, turn on car ignition
21: Attach USB cable to PC and witech Micropod 2
22: When Windows is done installing drivers, etc, you should show a network connection in the tool tray with no internet access
23: Run Wi-Tech
24: Press “Launch DRB III” button in lower right hand corner
25: Accept EULA
26: DRB Emulator will launch.
27: Enjoy.

How-To Create an Okta Login Account

Introduction
This article will describe how to create an Okta login account.
The account owner will automatically receive an Okta email when adding a subscription to a tool.

1. If you have received an Okta activation email, open the email and follow the activation link to create an Okta login account.

2. Create a password for your account by filling in the password fields.
Your password must have at least 8 characters, a lowercase letter, an uppercase letter, a number, and not include any parts of your username.
Then answer a security question, and select a security image.
When you are finished, click the Create My Account button.

3. The next step is to setup the extra verification needed for your Okta account. Click the Setup button for the Google Authenticator Mobile App.

4. You will need one of the smartphone devices shown below.
If you do not have the Google Authenticator Mobile App on your phone, you can download it from the App Store on your device.
Search the App Store for Google Authenticator, and install the app.
Then on your PC, select the type of phone you have available from the options shown below, and click the Next button to proceed.

5. You will now see a bar-code image on your PC screen. You need to scan this image with the Google Authenticator Mobil app.
Open the Google Authenticator app on your phone. Select the menu icon on the top right.

6. Then select Set up account.

7. Select Scan a barcode, and your phone will enter camera mode.

8. When your phone is in camera mode, position the phone to center on the bar code image displayed on the website.
The app will read the bar-code image and return to the main screen. Your account will now be visible with a randomly generated 6-digit code.
Once you are receiving a code, click the Next button.

9. Enter your code into the box and click Verify.

DO NOT DELETE THAT MFA APP (OKTA APP or GOOGLE AUTHENTICATOR APP) ONCE YOU HAVE CONNECTED THE APP WITH YOUR ACCOUNT. THE APP IS REQUIRED TO SIGN IN.

10. If your code was entered correctly, you will see a Passcode successfully verified! message. Click the Done button to proceed.

11. Click the Done button on the following window to return to the Okta login homepage.

12. You will then see the Okta login screen. Your can use your organizations sign-in button to login to wiTECH 2.0.

This Okta sign-in button will log you into Chrysler Micropod II, where you can begin troubleshooting and diagnosing vehicles.
