2. SCN coding importance

The move to SCN coding was *very* important. There are too many configuration items in every ECU now to have someone set options by hand whenever an ECU is changed, or to understand how changes on one device have to be done on other devices. These cars are really very very complex, and unlike your laptop, if something goes wrong can result in fatalities.

There are software dependencies between different ECUs, and actually loading software into ECUs is now needed regularly – and thus so is up-to-date diagnosis equipment and up-to-date firmware disks too. A simple example is an Audio system. If you update the firmware in the COMAND unit the firmware in every other MOST device needs also to be compatible (if you want it to work reliably) and thus they all need firmware updates. If you change one component then all components need to be updated to be properly compatible.

The latest equipment even now uses ethernet to load firmware into some ECUs (so it takes 20 minutes not 20 hours).

Without SCN coding it would take considerably longer to change any control unit, would result in mistaken configurations, and thus the cost of repair (or re-repair) would go up and up as systems got more complicated. SCN coding basically allows the correct configuration to be loaded into the car.

Imagine what could/would happen if you had to “hand code” the airbag controller after replacing it? Would you trust all of your airbags to work after the local mechanic had to set all the options correctly? I certainly would not.

Your comment that “The capital cost of the latest version, plus the monthly subscription, means it is beyond the reach of many smaller independent garages” is just wrong.

If your garage has the skills to deal with the technology (and i’d argue that if they don’t they shouldn’t be doing complex things with the newest vehicles), then it is completely affordable.

If you want to work on older cars, then most independents seem to use a clone machine and use it for limited things.

The EU competition commissioner has previously taken a good look at this market and enforced rules that mean diagnosis equipment (for newer vehicles) is available at sensible prices. This is not true in the rest of the world. Mercedes diagnosis systems in USA are more expensive, and in the far east (and I think Australia) are not available at all to independents.

Sorry to be so contradictory, and in summary, but without SCN coding there would be misconfigurations and un-reliability – possibly dangerous to life – occurring quite regularly. And if you are going to need to work on newer cars, there are very affordable Xentry diagnostics systems – you just need to talk to Mercedes.

It was all working fine last i used the machine.

So.. I connect the MUX to the car (smart 451), and then the lanwire to the mux and computer. Then i turn on the ignition.

In xentry i choose Smart -> 451 -> Diagnostic -> Das opens
in das: Identify car by control unit. After a few seconds some update thing appears and disappears followed by an error.(see att.) Fault (1.2)-2.503.9901. Cannot connect to car.

BMW ISTA-D and ISIS Software Comparison

This is good information for those who want to know if ista bmw provides technical diagrams and instructions like ISIS/ICOM.

ISIS is a BMW server platform for dealers. All updates are downloaded to the ISIS.
From there the ISIS updates ISID (diagnostics) tablets and ISSS (programming) if applicable.
The ISID runs an embedded windows xp OS.
Installed on the ISID is a program called ISTA-D (recent versions are codenamed ‘Rheingold’)
ISTA-D you can do all diagnostic functions, battery registrations etc etc. it also has wiring diagrams and guides on changing parts.
Some clever russians keep leaking the ISTA-D installer and it can easily be installed on any windows operating system. I can give you download links. They are around 10gb.
In ISTA-D you have a connection manager or how you wish to connect the computer to the odb port.
The common ones are:

EDIABAS
OMITEC USB
ICOM is BMW official cable, its predocessor was an OPPS unit. EDIABAS is a communication protocal which requires you to have BMW Standard Tools installed aswell – which isnt a bad thing! This utilises comport access amongst other connection methods and is configured by an ini file. Most people use this method of connection as its cheap, you can get a K+DCAN cable for under $50 USD now. Just do your research first as there ar bad clones about!
OMITEC is also an original USB interface. These are very rare. K+DCAN cable are copies of the OMITEC cable.
Update: Thinking it can be used on a Mac also… I use a Mac sometimes no problem with a windows VMware XP virtual machine and ISTA-D installed.
As I said there is no better diagnostic software. Its dealer level software and It’s freely available now all over the Internet. Plus it’s very user friendly!
So price is Cable + Windows XP CD key for the virtual machine…

the basic menu is available.

Service procedures and data, intended for the engine, are available in two groups:

a) basic menu: Vehicle management/Service function/Powertrain/Engine Electronics
b) Call up ECU functions menu of the engine management unit.

In the basic menu you can choose:

a) viewing data correction of cylinder Rough run and Stoichiometric mixture;
b) coding the injector data;
c) coding new NOx catalytic converter and NOx sensor, activate Desulphation session;
d) delete adaptations;
e) perform misfire/Rough run test for cold engine and view the “opinion” of DME, which engine has problems with smooth running.

In DME Call up menu you can choose:

a) view live data;
b) perform activation tests for several knots.

Now, start the review with DME Call up menu.

To enter it, click with Mouse on DME icon on the “tree” of units and press the button “Call up ECU function”.

Call up menu contains three basic choices:

a) identification: basic data of ECU unit;
b) diagnosis scan: live data;
c) component triggering: activation/test blocks.

“Identification” menu is very clear, so we move to diagnosis scan menu – content of it is seen in the image above.

The content of Component triggering submenu :

Unfortunately, the amount of test blocks is tiny. As can be seen, it’s possible to test the pressure of the low-pressure pump, in the injectors menu: switch off any of cylinders, switch on the water pump and electric fan.

Blocks of engine performance modes, Lambda probes, generator, VANOS, EGR and many other important knots are not available.

Diagnosis scan submenu.

a) fuel pressure (high pressure);
b) fuel pressure (low pressure);
c) idle;

allows to view exact values of the parameter and are not very interesting. Only remark (it refers to all analog/live data values, displayed by ISTA):

a) data representation is in small size, it’s hard to see the data, for example, during the driving session;
b) main part (with rare exceptions) of data have no reference value, no min/max limits displayed; no explanation for specific data;
c) bar type indicators are not used – they would ease the viewing of variables.

To read the required parameters, they have to be chosen (it/they will color in blue) and press the button ” Read status”.

Example, how does a viewing of live data look’s, using ISTA D:

Unfortunately, data are opaque – there is no visible separation, no ref/min/max limits, no bar indicators.

Several disadvantages of menu:

a) oil pressure – no required oil pressure displayed;
b) no PWM for keeping up the pressure is displayed;
c) data of detected pressure are displayed with an offset of -1000hPa.

The content of submenu, choosing operating values of the N53 series engine:

Live data of these parameters:

This submenu has “several” disadvantages:

a) the engine performance mode is displayed, but no Lambda values, with which the engine works, can be seen;
b) no possibility to overlook data during the desulphation process;
c) no PWM both for the low-pressure and high-pressure system can be seen – no information of system’s ability to hold the pressure;
d) no Offset values for NOx sensor data are visible, no reported Lambda values (wide-band and narrow-band).

Data of “Operational smoothness values” submenu:

In this menu, Rough run value min/max values ( +/-200) are displayed. According to the software release, in case of the normal engine performance, the values fluctuate in limits of +/-0.2, for some releases – only within limits of 0.02. It means, 0.1 or even 0,01% of max displayed! Conclusion – these indicated values are just confusing the user!

It’s not even worth to mention, that math, which would describe the coefficient ”engine order 0.5/1.0/1.5”, is not even present.

Content of ”Oxygen-sensor control” submenu:

This submenu has “several” disadvantages:

a) multiplicative adaptations are not displayed at all;
b) Lambda value for wide-band probes is not calculated/displayed; no description, how to interpret “voltage” indications;
c) PWM of probe heating is not displayed, from the status description it’s not clear, is the probe being heated or is already heated;
d) no Nernst resistance for probes is displayed, chemical activity of probes cannot be seen; no manual control of probe heating is possible;
e) the engine performance mode (requested/confirmed) is not displayed;
f) required Lambda values and their conformity to measured are not displayed.

No data available about:

a) injectors: learnbits;
b) injectors: real time values (opening time; multiplicative adaptations; voltage; energy, etc);
c) injectors: mechanical and chemical tests/results.

Submenu ”States” contains some of the status bits:

Unfortunately here the viewing of engine Live data ends. As you can see, the amount of displayed data is many times less than with INPA, and displayed data cannot be viewed easily.

Rough run values for correctly performing engine display lasting disbalance, therefore it’s not clear, what are these data. Possibly – applied Offset type corrections for each injector to reach smooth performance.

Stochastic irregular operation data:

Also regarding these data – no information. In ideal scenario – all values are targeting 0? Or, most probably: all values are targeting 50; increased value – decreased mechanical efficiency.

We can only pay our condolences to a specialist of the dealer center, who has to work with such “data”.

Unfortunately – no information, which menu deletes which group of adaptations.

Also, information regarding stored error messages is more than modest:

For example, in the existing situation, INPA freeze-frame will additionally display:

a) engine performance mode (Homogeneous/Homogeneous lean/Stratified charge);
b) engine status (work or heating up);
c) offset, multiplicative adaptation and integrator values, etc.

Data for separate knots can be seen into appropriate functionality blocks, as an example, we will view test block of VANOS:

After performing such tests, the diagnostics specialist has to take the decision by himself, does the VANOS performs correctly – ISTA displays following menu of suggestions:

As you can see, this menu doesn’t give exact answers.

Additionally, there are no possibilities to choose the position of camshaft manually, evaluate the PWM of the valve, it’s jittering.

The situation with, for example, checking the oil pressure is even sadder. There is no possibility to compare the inquired and measured oil pressure, no possibility to evaluate the PWM of oil valve. No test block, which could be started. Only testing option, offered by ISTA: evaluation of PWM of the valve with an oscilloscope. And, if rectangular impulses are observed, ISTA reports, that everything is in working condition!

Everything is in order, not taking into the account the PWM value, not taking into account it’s jittering? Impressive!

It is regrettable, that the dealer specialists are forced to work with such weak diagnostic tool. INPA options for MSD80 diagnostics are incomparably wider, but, for unknown reasons, INPA is banned for using in dealer service centers.

ECOM is the diagnostic and swipe communication interface used by daimler-benz’s production and r&d department. It supports the after sales diagnostic software Xentry, Vediamo, and the Monaco DTS, the exclusive development software, with higher access rights than SDconnect (C4).

ECom supports the CAN/DoIP network, which CAN be used for the diagnosis and brushing of new car audio and video entertainment systems. Vediamo for Mercedes engineers is an engineering software used by Mercedes engineers to develop diagnostic software, that is, Xentry and DAS now in use is developed based on Vediamo and delivered to general after-sales dealers. For this reason, using the Mercedes super engineering version is open to all diagnosis /coding/retrofit/flashing programming features. It is possible to add or reduce SA codes freely without going through VEDOC(the process of the original factory applying for modifying the equipment code), so as to achieve the purpose of modifying the vehicle equipment, such as adding SA500 electric rearview mirror.

Xentry and DAS Developer mode, commonly known as: exploit data engineering version after 2010, has added many restrictions on functions. Therefore, people may encounter that the vehicle version is too new to enter the control unit, or they cannot make any special modifications after entering the control unit. For example, the w204/212 2012 meter may need to be configured in the regional language, or turn on other convenience functions.

The database of diagnosis /coding/retrofit/flashing for the Mercedes engineer version USES the Xentry database, so the Mercedes engineer version is dependent on the Xentry version. As long as the database is new, the Mercedes engineer version can use the V4.00 version on the new model, and compact3 & SDconnect does not support the ODX document. The latest V5.00 supports ODX files with eCom. It is recommended to use eCom with DoIP function, which is faster and more stable.

How to Unlock BMW FEM/BDC with AutoHex II?

Autohex II   is the only tool that can unlock FEM/BDC without soldering, and it is the only tool that regenerates a secret file, and the only tool that can restore FEM back

BMW FEM (FRONT ELECTRONIC MODULE) and BMW BDC (BODY DOMAIN CONTROLLER) are the supersedes of CAS units. It is integrated with functions of CAS, FRM, JBE and ZGW. Comparing FEM with BDC also does the functions of REM which is separate ECU for controlling rear electronic functions of FEM model cars.

Immobilizer data is stored in BMW FEM/BDC and needs to be matched with DME and EGS for the proper running of car. The central gateway module (ZGM) is installed in the Front Electronic Module (FEM) as an independent control unit.

When you want to add extra keys for your car you can go for this option. Key coil should be attached to FEM/BDC in this process.

Without ISN and without a working key:

Autohex II is the only tool that is able to use this case. This option can be used when replacing FEM/BDC with a second hand one, or when a car losts DME and all working keys. When you use this option AutoHex will reset full FEM and generates a random ISN for it. After getting the secret file, you can program a new key for this FEM/BDC, then you can either write original ISN from DME/DDE to FEM/BDC, or write the generated ISN for FEM in the DME/DDE.
